About IMEDICA

While precise daily figures for Canada are difficult to pin down, estimates suggest that dozens of Canadians die every day due to sudden cardiac arrest. Heart disease is a leading cause of death in Canada, and a significant portion of these deaths are sudden and cardiac-related. For example, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada notes that approximately 40,000 cardiac arrests occur annually in Canada. This averages out to over 100 cardiac arrests per day, and a significant number of these are fatal.

Studies consistently show that bystander CPR and early defibrillation (using an AED) can significantly increase survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. For every minute CPR is delayed, the chance of survival decreases by 7-10%. If a larger percentage of the population had access to and were trained in basic BLS, thousands of additional lives could potentially be saved each year in Canada. Some research suggests that bystander CPR rates could be doubled with increased access and awareness, leading to a substantial improvement in survival outcomes.

The majority of cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital setting. Estimates vary, but in Canada, it’s generally believed that around 80-85% of cardiac arrests happen at home, in public places, or in other non-hospital environments. This highlights the critical importance of bystander intervention and the need for widespread BLS training in the community.
